The specific name tapii is a Guaraní word (tapií), means tapir (Tapirus), in reference to the subterminal mouth and the concave head of the species associated with its grazing semi-herbivorous mode of feeding similar to that of the tapir but highly untypical for the generally predatory Crenicichla.
